Activist Housing Research

Martínez, Miguel A. (2026) Activist Housing Research. In Marja Elsinga (Ed.) International Encyclopedia of Housing and Home, Second Edition. Reference Collection in Social Science. Elsevier. https://doi.org/10.1016/B978-0-443-44207-0.00021-3

This chapter presents the epistemological, theoretical and methodological foundations of activist housing research. It argues that politically engaged research is consistent with the pursuit of contextual and reflexive objectivity, rather than the conventional prescriptions of neutrality and absolute positivism. It also introduces key distinctions about types of housing activism and movements. Instead of merely studying housing activists and organizations, it proposes a broader analysis of the structural contexts, the contentious interactions between agents and its outcomes. This argument is illustrated with examples of activist housing research relating to homelessness, anti-eviction campaigns, squatting and tenant organizing.
